Male to Female (MTF Movies)
Transamerica
Transamerica is comedy staring Felicity Huffman who plays Bree, a preop transsexual. The premise of the movie is that Bree has scheduled her sex change surgery, but gets a call from a son she never knew she had one week before the surgery. Her therapist won't sign the necessary paper for the surgery until after Bree goes to meet her son. They go on a journey across the country and get to know one another. The movie is great and tastefully done. Personal Movie rating: 5 stars.
Soldier's Girl
Soldiers Girl tells the true story of a soldier, Barry Winchell (played by Troy Garity), who falls in love with a male to female transsexual (played by Lee Pace). The relationship isn't accepted well by the other soldiers and Winchell is eventually killed by one of his fellow soldiers. Personal Movie rating: 5 stars.
Normal
Normal tells the story of Roy (played by Tom Wilkinson), who finally decides to come out as a transgendered person shortly after his twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Most of the movie involves the reactions of Roy's transition to Ruth by his wife Irma (Jessica Lange), his co-workers, the church, and his children. This movie does a good job of demonstrating how other people in a transgendered person's life seem to feel that they are the victims (which we all know isn't true) when someone they know transitions. Jessica Lange does an excellent job portraying Irma, who turns out to be a very likable character in this film. Personal Movie rating: 5 stars.
Ma Vie En Rose (My Life in Pink)
Ma Vie En Rose tells the story of Ludovic (Georges Du Fresne), a seven year old MTF transgendered boy. Although, Ludovic's cross gender behavior is met with disgust and intolerance by his family, schoolmates, and neighbors, Ludovic continues to express her true self. It is an excellent film that demonstrates that life is very difficult for transgendered people even from a very young age. The film is French with English subtitles. Personal Movie rating: 5 stars.
Another Woman (Une autre femme)
Another Woman is about a MTF (Nathalie Mann) who revisits the family she left behind during her transition ten years before. At first she presents herself as a magazine writer, but later reveals to her family that she was Nico, their father and former husband, but is now Lea. The remainder of the film is about her family's reaction to this news. Personal Movie rating: 4 stars.
